Late….but the girls are 3!

Well, life has continued to be very busy so I apologize this is so late and it is hard to believe but the girls are 3 already! Both Aspen and Michaela are doing well. Aspen is about 33 lbs and Michaela is about 27 lbs now. All of the physical and occupational therapies they had been getting since coming home from the hospital had to stop on their 3rd birthday but both girls did qualify for preschool so they will be starting at Northeast Elementary next month….they will even be riding the school bus! Aspen qualified just so they can monitor her speech. Michaela was qualified as a preschooler with disabilities because she had significant delays in speech, gross motor, cognitive, etc. I don’t really think that she is THAT delayed, she does have some delays but I think she was just distracted and shy when we took her for the testing and this caused her to fail more of the tests. They said that is ok though and that they would rather start her out with more support than she may need than try to get it added later because it is a lot harder to do it that way.

They are both acting like typical 3 years olds…..are absolutely adorable one minute and completely opposite the next LOL. Aspen is now calling everyone her friend and she will come up and ask you if you need a hug and kiss and then ask if you are happy now…..so sweet! Michaela still does things her own way….it is so cute the way she says daddy and luv you because of the way she doesn’t properly say some of her sounds LOL They are starting to show some sibling rivalry but if one of them is hurt or gets put in time out, the other will stop whatever they are doing immediately and go make sure their sissy is ok.

OK, I know I have been a bad mom and have gotten behind in updating the blog…..life has really gotten crazy! Aspen and Michaela are now 2 years and 2 months old. They are talking like crazy now….one of their latest words is hungary and i is just so darn cute! At their 2 year old check up, Aspen was 34 inches and about 27 lbs (on the big girl scale!) and Michaela was 33 inches and 24 lbs on the big girl scale or 21 lbs 11 oz on the baby scale…..the baby scale weight was used as the official weight because the doctor didn’t want to switch scales to ensure consistency since they are still really watching Michaela’s weight. Michaela is still on the appetite stimulant and we still have an occupational and speech therapist coming weekly. Neither of the girls has shown any interest in potty training yet and Mark and I are just kind of waiting for them to show some interest before we really start trying to push it. Aspen is still very much a drama queen….when she is happy she is really happy and when she is mad you should run! LOL Michaela still has more of an even temperament but when she does get mad, watch out! Michaela is a very sensitive little girl who loves to cuddle, give hugs and kisses, and is always asking if you are ok. She loves her baby dolls and although she is the one who is considered to have developmental delays, we think she has gotten past that because she can climb ANYTHING! Aspen loves to dance and and has recently started singing with the radio ( she says la la la). She likes to use her play food to feed us and her baby dolls. For their 2nd birthday, they got tricycles but have not yet figured out how to pedal. They are going to daycare full time now and that seems to be going great….they have really come a long way since starting to go to daycare so we feel that it has definitely been good for them. Well, I think that is about it for now….I will try to post updates more regularly!

Here we are….1.5 years old already. Time sure does fly by! Both of the girls are walking and starting to talk. They say night night, hi, bye bye, mama, baba (bottle/cup), mooo (what they say for cow) and dog. They wave bye, cry when Mark leaves them at daycare, and give the most adorable and sweet kisses ever. Aspen is 22 lbs 3 oz and 31.75 inches long. Michaela is 18 lbs 9 oz and 31 inches long.

Great news from the Gi Doc!

Michaela had a check up at the GI doctor on Friday and we got great news. She is 18 lbs 1 oz now and is 29.5 inches long. She had gained 2 lbs in the last 2 months and the doctor was very excited. He said that if she continues on the same path she will make it onto the growth chart at about 21 months…..AND he said he thinks we are about out of the woods so he doesn’t want to see her again for 4 months which is about when she should be on the chart. She is still on the appetite stimulant and he said that we will probably need to continue increasing her dose as she gains weight . I put Aspen on the scale while we were there and she is 22 lbs 5 oz so there is just a little over 4 lbs difference now….the gap is narrowing! The nurse at the doctor office (who has seen the girls a lot) had to sit back and look for several minutes before she was able to tell them apart…it is kind of nice having people believe us when we say that they are identical LOL

Today was a very exciting day….Michaela took her 1st steps!!! She did it in such a big way too….we were at play group, the class was ending and she had been standing on the rug for a couple of minutes when she just took off and walked half way across it! She is very wobbly but she is so proud of hersef and trying so hard…she has taken a few steps throughout the day but the 1st ones have been her longest run so far (I am sure that won’t last long though)

So Aspen is walking….still not really good at it but definitely walking. She started yesterday. Mark and I were standing in the kitchen talking and here comes Aspen….walking half way across the kitchen. It is so cute!

The girls had their 15 month check up today. Aspen was 20 lbs 13 oz and 30.5 inches long. Michaela was 16 lbs 2 oz and 28 inches long. By the way, they both have 3 teeth on top now and the 4th is ready to come through.

Scooting, crawling, cruising, teeth, eating, and food……oh my!

Well, it has been quite a while since I posted an update and I apologize…..I went back to work 5 weeks ago and things have been really crazy. I am working opposite of Mark’s schedule so that one of us is always home with the girls and it is ending up being a lot of late late nights and early early mornings with not much sleep in between.

We have lots of updates to let you know about so lets get started!

Aspen: Aspen is still cruising but she took what I am going to consider her first real steps yesterday. She would go between me and Mark when we were sitting about 3 feet apart. They were definitely not stable steps and she has not been brave enough to try it without us sitting right there yet but we know it is going to be any day now. She does squat down and then stand back up with no hands so the balance is there (I don’t know if I could even do that LOL) she just needs some confidence. Her 2 front teeth on top came through probably about 6 weeks ago and we are able to put her hair in pigtails now. They kind of resemble horns because they stand straight up. She is very curious and into everything and is constantly babbling. She is saying mom and dada but no other words yet. We think she is about 19 lbs now but aren’t sure because she hasn’t been to the doctor in a couple months. She still enjoys dancing and she usually has everyone in the room laughing.

Michaela: Michaela has really taken off. She started scooting forward around the 1st week of June, started crawling around the 2nd week of June, and is now pulling up and cruising all over. Her PT can’t believe how far she has come in such a short amount of time. She had an evaluation with the feeding specialist at the end of June and we got some really good information. She is delayed in 6 of the 8 senses (yes, that is correct….there are a few they don’t teach you about in school). Her overall muscle tone is very low normal which means that it takes and always will take a lot of work and practice for her to learn new skills and gain strength. She thought that this was the main cause of all of her issues with eating…..she doesn’t even have good muscle tone in the jaw or mouth so her tongue, lips, and jaw don’t know how to move the food properly which makes it very difficult to eat. They gave us an 18 step feeding process to follow which includes everything from preparing her for meal time to sitting her in a special high chair so her body gets the support it needs to be able to focus on eating to what types of foods to offer and in what order. Her OT thinks that she is starting to do better with using her tongue to move food to the side of her mouth so hopefully it is working. We have also discovered that she gets bored with food very easily so it has been challenging trying to find new foods and textures all the time to get her to eat. At her GI doctor last week she was 15 lbs 8.5 oz. The doctor was very happy with her weight gain over the past month and said we didn’t need to come back for 2 months unless a problem came up. She is still on the appetite stimulant (periactin) and hypoallergenic formula. Her first tooth on top popped through a couple weeks ago and the 2nd came through on Monday.

Both girls are eating a mixture of table foods and purees. They can eat all table food but Michaela gets bored so we have to mix it up. Both girls got their 1st pair of Nike’s too…..no we are not one of THOSE parents but the PT said that they really do need them because of the support and flexibility. We also took our first family trip up to Dillon reservoir last weekend. We rented a canoe and Mark and the kids had fun fishing all day while me and my parents entertained the girls at the picnic site….pictures coming soon!

Well, I think that about sums everything up for now…..I will post more if I think of something or after their 15 month check up in a week or 2.
